NSW: Nurses back Carr's call for health talk at COAG

New South Wales nurses have backed Premier BOB CARR's call to put health care fundingat the top of the agenda for tomorrow's Council of Australian Governments meeting.

The Nurses Association says a failure to discuss health issues at the meeting couldhave a demoralising effect on tens of thousands of the state's nurses.

The union's secretary, BRETT HOLMES, says serious funding and staffing problems haveleft the state's nurses struggling to cope in overstretched public hospitals and nursinghomes.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has refused to add health to the agenda of the annual meeting, but Mr CARR says premiers and chief ministers agree it must be discussed.
