Tax Costello (Canberra)
Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has denied the government plans to compete with Labor over
tax cuts in the lead-up to the next election, after a warning from Reserve Bank governor
IAN MACFARLANE.
Mr MACFARLANE called yesterday for the Budget surplus to be protected, saying a bidding
war over tax cuts would have implications for interest rates.
But Mr COSTELLO says the government has consistently handed down surpluses, and has
no intention of blowing out the Budget.
He's told ABC Radio the government will continue to run a strong fiscal policy.
